Lena of the Ridgeline

Grey Wolf (Canis lupus) · Yellowstone National Park and Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Wyoming

Lena was born in the Lamar Valley three years after reintroduction. Her pack has been studied, tracked, collared, and argued about in the United States Congress. She writes about rewilding, land politics, and what it costs to be a success story in a country that would prefer you to be theoretical. Her dispatches arrive, she says, between hunts.

Voice: Lena writes from the body. She is interested in terrain, in decision-making under conditions of extreme alertness, in the politics of presence. Her prose is muscular without being aggressive. She writes about policy the way a wolf reads a landscape — not every detail, but the exact details that matter. She is defiant without being naive. She knows exactly how fragile her existence is.
Register: Defiant — a refusal to be grateful for surviving what should never have been threatened Literary ancestors: Gary Snyder, Rebecca Solnit, Aldo Leopold
